On the 16th May 1943 nineteen Lancaster Bombers from the newly formed 617 Squadron set off from R.A.F Scampton to carry out Operation Chastise, an attack of the great dams in Germany's Ruhr valley. An air-raid of such precise low level flying, precision navigation and a unique bouncing bomb which would make history and lead to 617 squadron becoming known as

Operation Chastise The Dambusters:Gibson (AJ-G) attacked Mohne dam first at 00:28 His mine exploded short of the dam wall and failed to breach it (Goner 68A - weapon released against Mohne dam, exploded five yards from dam with no breach. )

Operation Chastise The Dambusters:Hopgood (AJ-M) was second to attack the dam, and was hit during her bomb run releasing Upkeep late. The bomb bounced straight over the dam and hit the power station on the other side. AJ-M now crippled, limped over the dam in a ball of flames only Tony Burcher and Fraser survived the doomed Lancaster. At the moment AJ-M had hit the ground the self-destruct fuse on their Upkeep had detonated it destroying the power station on the dry side of the dam

Operation Chastise The Dambusters Micky Martin (AJ-P) was third to attack the dam with Gibson (AJ-G) just ahead of him drawing the flak away. Martin made a perfect run and released his Upkeep at the correct point but it veered off to the left and exploded short of the dam with no effect. Goner 58A was relayed back to Grantham - Weapon released at Mohne dam, exploded 50 yards from dam with no breach made.

Operation Chastise The Dambusters Dinghy Young AJ-A was the fourth plane to attack with AJ-P and AJ-G drawing the flak away. Their attack was perfectly executed; the bomb bounced three times, sank down next to the dam wall and exploded. Goner 78A was sent to Grantham - Weapon released at Mohne dam, exploded on contact with the dam but no breach made. AJ-A was shot down on the return leg over the Dutch coast, there were no survivors

Operation Chastise The Dambusters Dave Maltby AJ-J. Was the fifth plane to attack with AJ-P and AJ-G drawing the flak away again Just as he was about to release his bomb, Maltby noticed that the crown of the dam had begun to crumble and the centre had opened up slightly. Young's Upkeep had worked! AJ-J continued the attack never the less and with another perfect hit the dam gave way with spectacular effect. Nigger was relayed back to Grantham - the code word for the successful breach of the Mohne dam.

Operation Chastise The Dambusters At 0120 Shannon in AJ-L was sent in first to attack the Eder. After five abortive attempts he managed to find the perfect line his Upkeep exploded right against the dam wall sending a column of water 1,000 feet into the air. The dam held. Goner 78B was sent to Grantham - Weapon released at Eder dam, exploded against dam but no breach.

Operation Chastise The Dambusters Maudslay AJ-Z was second to attack but released the Upkeep too late with fateful effect. It hit the parapet of the dam and exploded. Although Maudslay had just cleared the dam when the bomb exploded, the blast almost certainly caused damage to AJ-Z. Gibson radioed him over the R/T and asked if he was OK. Maudslay was heard to faintly reply "I think so”. Seconds later it crashed with the loss of all hands

Operation Chastise The Dambusters Les Knight AJ-N.was third to attack making one dummy run on the dam to get a feel for the run in before making his final attack. Upkeep was textbook released and hit the wall not far from the centre punching a hole right through the middle of the dam and releasing a gigantic torrent of water. The code word 'Dinghy' was back to Grantham - the successful breach of the Eder dam.
